The library will be closed December 25 and 26 for the holiday! We will re-open on December 27 as usual. Have a merry Christmas!
Welcome to the James Bryan Creech Public Library website. There are always new things happening here even though we're only open a few days a week.
Our library hours are:
Why Doesn't our library offer eBooks?
We have many patrons asking why our library doesn't offer ebooks. There are several factors that all wind up leading to cost. Publishers are concerned about losing money by working with libraries and make the library's cost to purchase ebooks cost prohibitive, if they will sell them at all. The software used to offer and download ebooks is expensive, costing more than our annual book budget. This is one of those cases where the public needs to understand our reasoning.
The “Big Six” Publishers (down to four now due to buyouts) worry that they are losing money by working with libraries. When you go to purchase an ebook at Amazon, it may cost you $10 but the publishers charge a library as much as 5 or more times that amount for the same ebook. I compared the pricing for one book a few weeks ago. The Kindle version was $10 for me to purchase and $85 for the library to purchase. One publisher will only allow us to check out an ebook 26 times before we must purchase another license and at least one publisher will not let libraries purchase any ebooks. We can purchase several traditional books for the cost of one ebook and it can be checked out as many times as you want or until it falls apart. Some publishers do not work with libraries at all and will not sell a license to any library or do not offer new books to libraries.
The “platform”, the software that makes the ebooks available for checkout to the public, is expensive. Overdrive and other companies offer discounts for large counties and small counties. Unfortunately, we fall somewhere in between. Our costs just for the platform itself are much more than our budget for books annually! That's just for the software to offer our patrons ebooks, we still have to purchase ebooks licenses in order for our patrons to check out books.
We are determined to give the citizens of Four Oaks the best value for their money. We must work within our budget to provide the best library Four Oaks can provide. Ebooks would be a great boon to our system if we could provide them at a fair and equitable cost. Our state library offers a selection of ebooks at http://openlibrary.org/borrow. The Johnston County Library system participates in this program and has donated books. I do want to note, these are NOT the latest bestsellers BUT there are some great books available! I have provided instructions for downloading from this site and will be posting them on our website. They sound complicated but you should know you can always come by the library for help. Just go through step by step and you should be downloading ebooks in no time at all.
If you want more information on the problems libraries are having providing ebook content, please take the time to search “libraries publishers ebooks”. Please note: the use of “publishers” in this letter refers to the six major publishing companies.
Come by the library and we can talk about it.
We are making some changes again! Be patient, things will be so much better after we finish! If you've been by, you had to have noticed the gorgeous new flower beds out front!
Many thanks to Girl Scout Troop 394 for all of their hard work! They received a grant for the azaleas from WRAL and it took a lot of work to remake the flower beds. They aren't quite finished but they already look much better. Thanks girls!
In case of inclement weather, please call the library to see if we will open. 919-963-6013
We have a new sign in front of our library!! Many thanks to Horizon Family Medicine and Lee's Signs for their generous donation. It looks GREAT!!
A Special Note from Tonie
I just wanted to say thanks to all of our great patrons! We had so many of you visit us in the month of July that our library was almost always filled. We also have stacks of new books thanks to your generosity. I also want to say "Thanks" to all the volunteers that made it possible to keep things running. I could not have done it without you!
I had a great time at the Acorn Festival! It was so much fun getting out and telling people about our library and the programs we offer!
